About the Sorsby's Fundus Dystrophy Registry (SFDR)
The Sorsby's Fundus Dystrophy Registry (SFDR) has been established by the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University, to advance our understanding and treatment of Sorsby's fundus dystrophy, and to serve as an educational resource for patients and their families.

Many patients with early onset macular degeneration and a positive family history in two or more close relatives may in fact have Sorsby's fundus dystrophy or a related variant. We encourage such patients to inquire their physicians whether this diagnosis has been considered. We are happy to provide background information on this condition as part of the educational mission of this website.

The goal of the registry is to promote research into the cause of and the treatment for Sorsby's fundus dystrophy, which is an important blinding disease that currently has no cure or effective treatment. Except for an earlier age of onset, Sorsby's fundus dystrophy closely resembles other types of macular degeneration, such as age-related macular degeneration, which is the commonest cause of blindness in persons aged 65 and older. By understanding this disease through research, we hope to contribute to the greater knowledge of macular degeneration in general. The Principal Investigator of the SFDR project is Professor Mark S. Blumenkranz, M.D.
